Why I Paint: My Journey as a Lifelong Artist

There’s something magical about holding a paintbrush in your hand and knowing that, for a little while, nothing else matters. For me, art has always been more than just colors on a canvas—it’s been a place of comfort, courage, and freedom.

I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember, but looking back, I realize that painting was the first thing I ever truly did just for me. It wasn’t about grades, responsibilities, or expectations. It was about expression—raw, personal, and completely mine. When I picked up a pencil or brush, the outside noise faded. I could be completely myself—free and unafraid of judgment. That was a rare feeling, and I clung to it.

One of the turning points in my journey came during my school years. I’ll never forget the day Mr. Troxell, the art teacher, invited me to join Advanced Art after spotting an acrylic painting of a pretty Elk that I was carrying with my books. I was a little confused—I didn’t even have the required prerequisites. But he saw something in me. Something I hadn’t even fully seen in myself yet. That invitation meant more than just a new class. It meant I was seen. It meant I was welcome.

Art was always that space for me—the place where I didn’t have to explain myself or fit into anyone else’s expectations. Whether I was sketching late at night or getting lost in layers of acrylic and then oil paint, I felt a sense of home in the creative process. It gave me confidence and clarity in moments when life felt overwhelming or uncertain.

Over the years, my love for painting only grew. And now, as I teach others and create pieces that bring joy into homes and hearts, I often think back to that little girl who just wanted a space to feel free. I paint because it still gives me that same feeling. That freedom. That joy. That welcome.

If you’re new to painting, or even just thinking about picking up a brush for the first time, I want you to know: there’s a place for you in this world of art. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be willing to try—and to give yourself the grace to explore. Art doesn’t demand perfection; it invites honesty.

And that’s why I’ll keep painting. For the freedom. For the joy. And for the chance to keep welcoming others into this beautiful, messy, magical world of creativity.

If you're looking for a place to start or a creative community to grow with, I’d love to invite you into my free Facebook group for artists. Whether you want to share your latest piece, ask for tips, or just be around people who get it, there’s always a seat for you at our table. You’re welcome here—just like I once was.
