3 Things I Always Tell Myself While Painting (And Why They Matter) 🎨

If you’re an acrylic painter—beginner or experienced—you know that painting is just as much about mindset as it is about technique. You might even catch yourself whispering little reminders as you work through a piece. Over the years, I’ve realized there are three key things I always tell myself while painting, and they’ve become game-changers in my process.

In my latest YouTube video, I’m sharing painting tips for beginners and seasoned artists alike—focusing on those quiet but powerful thoughts that help me stay creative and confident.

🎨 Here’s what you’ll learn in the video:

1. Are your darks dark enough and your lights light enough?

Understanding values in painting is one of the most important skills to master. By checking that your darks are deep and your lights pop, you create depth and dimension that pull viewers into your work.

2. Drive the brush

This is a personal mantra that reminds me to paint with confidence. It’s easy to be timid, especially in the early stages of a piece, but strong, deliberate brushwork makes all the difference. If you struggle with brush control or making your marks matter, this tip is for you.

3. Layers, layers, layers

If I don’t like how something looks, I just remind myself—it’s not done yet! Layering in acrylic painting creates interest, depth, and room to fix anything that’s not quite right. This is one of my favorite acrylic painting tips and one I repeat in every class I teach.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking for new painting techniques to try, these tips will help you enjoy the creative process and improve your results.

🖌️ Helpful for anyone who:
